LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas freshman
Darryn Peterson has been named to the 20-member Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Watch List, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced Monday.
Peterson is looking to become the second Jayhawk to win the Bob Cousy Award joining Frank Mason III, the 2017 recipient. Additionally, this is the third-consecutive season a Jayhawk has appeared on the Cousy Award list as
Dajuan Harris Jr. was on the list in 2023-24 and 2024-25.
In his unofficial college debut, Peterson scored 26 points, including six three-point field goals, with four rebounds and five steals in No. 19 Kansas' 90-82 win at No. 11 Louisville in an exhibition game on Oct. 24.
Named the Preseason Big 12 Player of the Year and a unanimous Preseason All-Big 12 selection by the league coaches, Peterson is one of Kansas' highest-ever recruited players after earning Naismith Trophy High School Player of the Year and McDonald's All-American honors following the 2024-25 season. Last season, the 6-foo6-6 Canton, Ohio, native averaged 30.4 points, 7.2 rebounds, 7.4 assists and 2.2 steals per game. He ended 2024-25 ranked No. 1 by 247Sports.com and On3.com. The annual Bob Cousy Award, named after the Class of 1971 Hall of Famer and former Boston Celtic and Holy Cross guard, celebrates its 22nd year by highlighting the top point guard in Division I men's college basketball.
Fans are encouraged to participate in Fan Voting in each of the three rounds starting on Friday, October 31. In late January, the watch list of 20 players for the 2026 Bob Cousy will be narrowed to 10, and then in late February, to just five. In March, the five finalists will be presented to Cousy, Nancy Lieberman, and the Hall of Fame's selection committees, where winners will be selected. The Selection Committees for the Bob Cousy Award are composed of top college basketball personnel, including media members, head coaches, sports information directors, and Hall of Famers.
The winners of the 2026 Cousy Award will be presented on a to-be-determined date, along with the four other members of the Men's Starting Five. Additional awards being presented include the Jerry West Award (Shooting Guard), Julius Erving Award (Small Forward), Karl Malone Award (Power Forward), and the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (Center).
