LAWRENCE, Kan. – S'Mya Nichols, a two-time All-Big 12 First Team selection and All-America honorable mention honoree last season, has been named to the John R. Wooden Award Preseason Top 50 Watch List, the Los Angeles Athletic Club announced Tuesday.
Established in 2004, the Women's Wooden Award is presented annually to the outstanding collegiate basketball Player of the Year. Candidates for the award are selected by a panel of college basketball experts from across the 50 states. Perpetual versions of the trophy are displayed in the Basketball Hall of Fame and the Los Angeles Athletic Club. The preseason watch list comprises 50 student-athletes who are frontrunners for the Wooden Award All-American Team and the John R. Wooden Award.
Nichols is on the Wooden Award Watch List for the first time, adding to her growing list of preseason recognition which includes a spot on the Jersey Mike's Naismith Trophy Watch List and the Nancy Lieberman Point Guard of the Year Watch List. She was also a unanimous selection to the Preseason All-Big 12 for the second straight season.
From Overland Park, Kansas, Nichols has scored at least 20 points in three of KU's first four games to open the 2025-26 season, including 20 points on Nov. 15 to lift the Jayhawks to an 82-77 victory over Missouri in the StorageMart Border Showdown. She leads the Jayhawks and ranks fifth in the Big 12 in both scoring (19.5 points per game) and assists (6.8 per game).
