LAWRENCE, Kan. – Bicycles, toys, clothes, tools and appliances were aplenty as the Kansas men's basketball team participated in its annual holiday shopping for Lawrence area families Wednesday evening at Walmart.
For the 33
rd year, former KU player Roger Morningstar worked with the Salvation Army to fund Lawrence area families to have a better Christmas with the help of the current Jayhawks. Beginning in 1992, under then-head coach Roy Williams, current KU assistant coach
Jacque Vaughn participated in holiday shopping his four seasons as a KU player.
"How impressive is it for an event like this to last this long," Kansas head coach
Bill Self said. "It's a great cause and Roger and Linda Morningstar have been tremendous in putting it together with the Salvation Army. It's Christmas time and there are families out there that can use a little boost. They'll all be around each other and celebrating. Every child deserves to have something under their Christmas tree. Our guys understand that and appreciate it. It's fun for them to do."
Each family submits lists of what they want for Christmas and it is then up to the KU players, with assistance from coaches' wives, staff and store personnel, to complete the wish list within a set budget. With the assistance of Walmart management, Morningstar organizes the event.
Morningstar gathers the KU contingent near the front of the store and distributes each student-athlete with wish lists supplied by the families. The players then grab shopping carts and head throughout the store. The full carts then hit the checkout line with many items. After, the gifts are loaded and headed to the Salvation Army to make some Lawrence area families Christmas that much better.
"We love doing this," said redshirt-junior
Wilder Evers. "It's great to get all the guys here and do something for a good cause. Everybody loves to give back and we're a close group. So, being able to give back as a group is really cool."
The annual holiday shopping is one of many community service events the Kansas men's basketball program participates in throughout the year.
No. 19 Kansas (7-3) will play at NC State (7-3) Saturday, Dec. 13, at 4:30 p.m. (Central) at the Lenovo Center in Raleigh, North Carolina. The contest will be televised on ESPN.
