LAWRENCE, Kan. - Kansas Track and Field is set to host the 102nd running of the Kansas Relays, presented by RCB Bank. Events start at 2 p.m. CT on Thursday, April 17th, and will go through the afternoon Saturday, April 19th.Â
"The team is excited for the Relays. Meet director Tim Byers has done an excellent job of preparing for the meet. The competition should be great, and we look forward to competing at home," Kansas Head Coach Stanley Redwine said.Â
A tradition since 1923, the Kansas Relays have been a staple in the Lawrence community and in the Midwest track scene for over 100 years. Each April, Kansas Track and Field plays host to the third-longest continuously running track event in the United States. This year the Relays will play host to over 5,500 entries, 4,630 individuals, 106 colleges, 447 high schools, and 906 relay race entries.Â
Coming off of impressive performances so far this spring in the outdoor season, the Jayhawks will look to defend their home track this weekend as hosts of the Relays.Â
Kansas has been led this spring by senior Alexander Jung, who is coming off of breaking his own school record once again, scoring 7,738 points in the Men's Decathlon at the Jim Click Shootout in Tucson, Ariz. Another senior breaking his own record this spring is Dimitrios Pavlidis, who broke his own Greek National Record in the discus this past weekend in Ramona, Okla., with a mark of 65.11m (213-7.25 ft.).Â
Senior Clayton Simms will be competing in his fourth Kansas Relays, following a second-place finish in his last appearance at the Battle on the Bayou in Baton Rouge. Simms was a qualifier to the NCAA Indoor National Meet just last month in the Men's Pole Vault.Â
Among the names that will be in attendance at this year's Relays are Kansas Track and Field Head Coach Stanley Redwine. Redwine will be coaching his 25th Relays at the helm of the Jayhawks, but spent his summer in Paris coaching Team USA at the Olympic Games.Â
