TAMPA, Fla. – Kansas guard
S'Mya Nichols has concluded her sophomore season with the recognition of All-America Honorable Mention as chosen by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA), the organization has announced.
The 2024 WBCA Division I Coaches' All-America team is comprised of the 10 best players in NCAA Division I regardless of position. In addition to the first team, 40 student-athletes received All-America Honorable Mention.
A native of Overland Park, Kansas, Nichols picks up her first All-America honor following a standout sophomore season. She led the Jayhawks and ranked fifth in the Big 12 in scoring, averaging 18.6 points per game. Nichols scored in double figures 26 times in 30 games, with 16 games of scoring 20 or more points. During the season, she became the 33rd player in program history to score 1,000 career points, doing so in her 58th career game to become the second-fastest player in school history to hit reach the milestone.
A two-time All-Big 12 First Team selection, Nichols led the Big 12 and ranked second nationally in free throws made (218), shattering the previous school record for single-season free throws. She finished the season ranked fifth in league history with her 218 made free throws and she shot 83.8 percent (218-260) from the line to rank fifth in the Big 12 this season. Nichols has already moved into the top 10 in school history for free throws made with 384 in her career.
Kansas has had three players named to the WBCA All-American team in its history, including Tamecka Dixon in 1997, Angela Aycock in 1995 and Lynette Woodard, a four-time honoree from 1978-81. With Nichols' selection, the Jayhawks have now had a player receive WBCA All-America Honorable Mention in each of the past three seasons, with center
Taiyanna Jackson earning the honor in 2023 and 2024.
