LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas Athletics is excited to announce the hiring of Mary Woods-Lopez as the new assistant coach for the Kansas Swimming and Diving program, KU head coach
Clark Campbell announced today.
Woods joins the Jayhawks following a successful and progressive coaching career at Saint Louis University, where she served as head coach for both the men's and women's swimming and diving teams. Woods spent six years on the Billikens' staff—starting as a graduate assistant in 2020, advancing to assistant coach in 2022, and becoming the head coach in June 2023.
"We are thrilled to welcome Mary to our staff," Campbell said. "She accomplished so much as a head coach at Saint Louis University, and we are confident she will make a tremendous impact on our program. Mary is a complete coach who will elevate everyone around her."
During her tenure at Saint Louis University, Woods managed the daily operations and seasonal planning for a roster of 60 student-athletes. She designed specialized training programs for distance, mid-distance, and sprint groups, which led to four school records and 80 lifetime best performances at the 2023 Atlantic 10 Conference Championships. Woods also prioritized supporting student-athletes' academic success by creating adaptable training schedules for those enrolled in demanding programs.
Woods' commitment to academics was reflected in the team's outstanding grade point averages. The women's swimming and diving team posted the highest GPA (3.86) among all NCAA Division I swimming and diving programs in spring 2024, following a strong 3.78 GPA in fall 2023. The men's team also excelled academically, finishing seventh nationally among Division I men's programs in fall 2024 with a 3.67 GPA.
Woods' collaborative style extends beyond coaching to working closely with strength and conditioning staff, athletic trainers, and academic advisors, ensuring a holistic approach to athlete development.
A native of Carmel, Indiana, Woods has been immersed in swimming from a young age. She competed for Carmel Swim Club and Carmel High School before continuing her athletic career at DePauw University. A 2019 graduate, she earned a bachelor of arts in kinesiology and psychology. As a collegiate swimmer, Woods specialized in breaststroke, butterfly, and sprint events, served as team captain, set a school record in the 100 IM, and was part of multiple relay teams that established school records. Beyond athletics, she was active in Pi Beta Phi, the Student Athlete Advisory Committee, DePauw's First-Year Mentor Program, and Relay For Life.
As a coach, Woods emphasizes building strong relationships with her athletes and fostering success both in and out of the pool.
Woods will begin her role immediately and join Campbell and the Kansas staff in preparing for the upcoming season.
