LAWRENCE, Kan. – Freshman
Darryn Peterson has been named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week (Jan. 19) in a vote of a media panel that covers the league.

In being named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week, Peterson is also a member of the Big 12 Starting Five for the second consecutive week and third time this season. He also earned the honor Nov. 10.

In the 84-63 win against No. 2 Iowa State (1/13), Peterson scored 16 points with five rebounds and two steals in 27 minutes. In the 80-62 win versus Baylor (1/16), the Canton, Ohio, native had 26 points on 11-13 (84.6%) shooting, including 2-for-4 from three-point range, in 23 minutes. The 23 points was Peterson's sixth 20-point effort in nine games played this season. In the Baylor contest, Peterson became the first Kansas freshman to score at least 25 points and shoot at least 80.0 percent from the field since Josh Jackson on Feb. 11, 2017 at Texas Tech (31 PTS, 80.0% FG).

Flory Bidunga has earned the honor twice, Nov. 17 and Dec. 1 and senior
Melvin Council Jr. was named the Big 12 Player and Big 12 Newcomer of the Week on Dec. 16 and was also a member of the Big 12 Starting Five.

No. 19 Kansas (13-5, 3-2 Big 12) will play at Colorado (12-6, 2-3 Big 12) on Tuesday, Jan. 20. The game from the CU Events Center will start at 9 p.m. (Central) and will be televised on ESPN.
