Kansas Tennis Begins ITA Central Region Championships in Memphis

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas tennis opened its competition at the ITA Central Region Championships in Memphis, Tennessee, with the tournament running from Oct. 15-19.
All nine Jayhawks are competing in the tournament, including seniors Kyoka Kubo, Meg McCarty and Yerkezhan Arystanbekova, juniors Anna Putilina and Simryn Jacob, sophomore Nahyeong Cho, and freshmen Caroline Manzi, Polina Koneva and Hyejeong Ahn.
In singles play for the Round of 64, McCarty faced Higuita Barraza of Missouri, earning a three-set victory, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (5). Putilina also secured a three-set win against Anali Kocevar of Minnesota, battling through a close opening set before claiming the match, 6-7 (10), 6-3, 6-0.Â
Both Jayhawks advanced to the Round of 32, with Putilina defeating Daniela Zegarra of Oral Roberts, 6-2, after her opponent retired due to injury. McCarty came up short against Natalie Oliver of Arkansas State, falling 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-0.Â
In the consolation rounds, Manzi secured another close victory for the Jayhawks, defeating Clare Schaefer of Iowa, 6-3, 3-6, [10-8]. Ahn faced Salles Canudas of Missouri in a tightly contested match but came up short, falling 6-7 (5), 7-6 (4), [10-4].
In doubles play in the Round of 64, the Jayhawks dominated on Day 1 of the tournament. Arystanbekova and Putilina teamed up for a decisive 8-1 victory over Lily Olson and Anna Sidorenko of St. Thomas. Kubo and Koneva also secured an 8-3 win over Millie Day and Valentina Vargas of Iowa State. McCarty and Cho rounded out the doubles success with an 8-3 victory over Iowa State's Shuqian Xu and Clare Schaefer. All three Kansas doubles teams advanced to the Round of 32.
