LAWRENCE, Kan. – A 21-7 third-quarter burst helped Kansas pull away from Washburn and secure a 68-50 exhibition victory on Thursday night at Allen Fieldhouse.
Libby Fandel led all scorers with 16 points while tacking on five assists. Brittany Harshaw and Regan Williams joined Fandel in double figures, scoring 15 and 14 respectively. Brooklynn Renn tallied nine rebounds, the most of any player.
Sarah Gatwech led Washburn with 10 points, the only Ichabod to reach double digits.
"The team performed really well, especially with the physicality of the game," Kansas head coach Brandon Schneider said. "That experience will be valuable as we move into non-conference and conference play against teams that bring a similar level of physicality. It's important that we continue to emphasize poise and composure as a team. Focusing on the little things will ultimately be what leads to our success."
S'Mya Nichols and Williams accounted for 10 of Kansas' 14 first-quarter points and Kansas led by as many as six following a jumper from Nichols at the 1:26 mark. A Washburn three-pointer on the next possession made it 14-11 after one quarter of play. Williams tallied four rebounds in the first quarter, leading all players on the floor and picking up one-third of Kansas' rebounds.
The Jayhawks' lead was re-extended to five partway through the second quarter, before growing to eight points after an Anna Gooden three-pointer at the 5:56 mark in the second. The triple brought the Jayhawks' lead to 21-13, where it would continue to climb. Kansas would tack on five more to cap a 12-0 Jayhawk run, before Washburn answered with a 7-0 burst of its own to come charging back to close the half. At the break, Kansas led 31-26.
The Ichabods continued to hang tough with the Jayhawks in the early moments of the third, but a scoring drought of nearly four minutes allowed Kansas to stretch its lead back to seven at the four-minute mark of the quarter. The Jayhawks' lead would grow to 14 at the 2:05 mark in the quarter. After continuing to pull away, the Jayhawks would cap off the third ahead 52-33.
Washburn attempted to claw back in the fourth, responding to a 6-0 Kansas run with an 8-0 run of its own. Undeterred, the Jayhawks maintained their advantage and wound down the closing minutes for a 68-50 win.
Next up for the Jayhawks is the start of regular season play, which begins on Tuesday, Nov. 3, as KU hosts Omaha. That game will tip at 6:30 p.m. CT from Allen Fieldhouse and be streamed on ESPN+.
