LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas freshman
Darryn Peterson been named to the 10-member Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year Award Midseason Watch List, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced Tuesday.
The annual Jerry West Award, named after the late Class of 1980 Hall of Famer and 1959 NCAA Final Four Most Valuable Player, celebrates its 12th year by highlighting the top shooting guards in Division I men's college basketball.
Peterson, the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week on Jan. 19 and three-time Big 12 Starting Five weekly honoree, leads Kansas with a 21.1 point per game scoring average. The Canton, Ohio, guard who was Dick Vitale's Diaper Dandy of the Week on Feb. 12, has six games of 20 or more points and has made 35 threes in 12 games played this season. Peterson's last two threes were the difference in propelling No. 11 Kansas to a 64-61 come-from-behind win at No. 13 Texas Tech on Feb. 2.
The Big 12 Preseason Freshman of the Year and unanimous Preseason All-Big 12 selection, Peterson is on most every national player of the year watch list. Some of those include the Wooden Award, the Naismith Trophy, NABC Division I Player of the Year, and the USBWA Oscar Robertson Trophy.
The Jerry West Award watch list will be narrowed to five finalists in mid-March, with the award winner announced ahead of the Final Four. The watch list will remain fluid throughout the season, and student-athletes may move on or off the list based on performance until the final five finalists are determined.
Beginning Friday, Feb. 6, fans will be able to vote throughout the remaining rounds of the selection process, with the leading vote-getter receiving one additional vote from the selection committee. Fans can vote at

The winners of the 2026 West Award will be presented on a to-be-determined date, along with the other four members of the Men's and Women's Starting Five. Additional awards being presented include the Bob Cousy and Nancy Lieberman Awards (Point Guard), Julius Erving and Cheryl Miller Awards (Small Forward), Karl Malone and Katrina McClain Awards (Power Forward), and the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Lisa Leslie Awards (Center).
