LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas women's basketball head coach
Brandon Schneider will be joined by the guard trio of
S'Mya Nichols,
Wyvette Mayberry and
Elle Evans at Big 12 Media Day, which will be held at the T-Mobile Center in downtown Kansas City, Missouri next Tuesday, Oct. 22.
Kansas is one of eight teams which will participate in the morning session of the event, which features various interview stations along with photo and content creation opportunities. The Jayhawks will be the first team to do question and answer on the main stage, taking the stage at 9:15 a.m. following Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark's opening address. Coverage on the main set for Big 12 Basketball Media Days can be found on ESPNU and ESPN+ beginning at 10 a.m., with Coach Brandon and Nichols slated to join the broadcast beginning at 11:13 a.m.
Schneider is in his 10th season leading the Kansas women's basketball program. He has guided the Jayhawks to the postseason in each of the past three seasons, including NCAA Tournament appearances in 2022 and 2024. His team is picked to finish eighth in the Big 12 this season, the first for the league as a 16-team conference following the additions of Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado and Utah.
Nichols was named a Preseason All-Big 12 selection, earning one of 10 coveted spots on the team following a standout freshman season in Lawrence. She led the Jayhawks in scoring at 15.4 points per game and scored in double figures 29 times in 33 games last season, with nine games of 20 or more points. For her efforts, Nichols was a unanimous selection to the Big 12 All-Freshman Team and earned a spot on the All-Big 12 First Team.
Mayberry is back for her third season at Kansas, where she has started 63 games over the past two years. Last season, she ranked fifth on the team in scoring at 9.7 points per game, while knocking down 40 three-pointers, the second-most on the team. Mayberry was also second on the team with 76 assists, trailing only Nichols.
Evans joins the Jayhawks as a junior after playing her first two seasons at North Dakota State. She was named a First Team All-Summit League selection last season after averaging 14.5 points and 4.9 rebounds per game while ranking No. 5 nationally by shooting a staggering 45.7 percent from three-point range.
Kansas opens the 2024-25 season with an exhibition game against Washburn on Nov. 1 before hosting Lindenwood on Nov. 6 in the first of seven non-conference games at Allen Fieldhouse.
