
23 Jayhawks Receive Dr. Gerald Lage Academic Achievement Award

IRVING, Texas – Twenty-three student-athletes across six sports from the University of Kansas were given the Dr. Gerald Lage Academic Award for the 2023-24 school year, the highest academic achievement in the Big 12 conference, it was announced this month.
Out of the 236 total Big 12 student-athletes honored, the 23 Kansas student-athletes ranked sixth out of the 14 member schools last season, just narrowly behind tying for second place with Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Texas (25).Â
Eligibility requirements for the prestigious award require student-athletes maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.80 and complete 100 credit hours at the time of the nomination. Honorees are recognized only once on this list.Â
The programs representing Kansas include women's track and field (7), rowing (7), swimming & diving (4), volleyball (2), football (2) and men's basketball (1).

In the 13th year of the award, the Big 12 has awarded the honor to 1,443 student-athletes across the conference in memory of Dr. Gerald Lage.
Up until his death in 2007, Lage served as the Oklahoma State faculty athletics representative with the NCAA and the Big Eight/Big 12 Conference for 24 years and was chairman on three separate occasions (1985-86, 93-94 and 2003-04).Â
He first joined the Oklahoma State staff in 1966 as an assistant professor at the College of Business Administration before moving over as the director of graduate studies in the department of economics (1974-77). He later served as head of the department of economics and finance (1978-84), director of the OSU Center for International Trade and Development (1985-87) and associate dean for research and graduate programs in the college of business administration (1997-2004).
