Kansas opened the season with a 56-43 victory over Lindenwood on Nov. 6, the eighth-straight season-opening victory for the Jayhawks.
S'Mya Nichols led the Jayhawks with 20 points, while freshman
Regan Williams scored 11 points and grabbed five rebounds in her collegiate debut.
Â
Under the direction of 10th-year head coach
Brandon Schneider, Kansas was picked to finish eighth in the Big 12 preseason poll, which is voted on by the leagues head coaches. The Jayhawks return two starters from its 2023-24 team, which finished 20-13 overall and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Kansas has won at least 20 games and won a game in the postseason in each of the past three seasons.
Â
Nichols led the Jayhawks with 20 points on 7-of-11 shooting in the season-opening win over Lindenwood. It was the 10th career 20-point game for the standout sophomore from Overland Park. Following a stellar freshman campaign, Nichols earned a spot on the Preseason All-Big 12 Team and was named to the Naismith Women's Basketball Player of the Year Watch List.
Â
Nichols was joined in the starting lineup by four Kansas newcomers against Lindenwood in
Sania Copeland,
Elle Evans,
Brittany Harshaw and
Regan Williams. That group of four newcomers combined for 25 points, helping the Jayhawks get 45 of its 56 points from the starting lineup.
Â
Williams had the biggest impact, scoring 11 points on 5-of-8 shooting in her debut. Harshaw added nine points and nine rebounds, hitting three three-pointers in her first game as a Jayhawk.
Â
Kansas was strong defensively against Lindenwood, holding the Lions to 27.1 percent (16-59) shooting from the field. The Jayhawks held Lindenwood to 11 points in the first half, matching the third-lowest first half scoring total allowed in program history.
Â
Sam Houston State comes to Lawrence with a record of 2-0 following wins over Jarvis Christian and Seattle. The Bearkats were picked to finish 10th in Conference USA after ending the 2023-24 season with a record of 5-22 (2-14 CUSA).
Â
This will be the second all-time meeting between Kansas and Sam Houston State, with KU claiming an 87-59 victory over the Bearkats on Dec. 28, 2011, in Lawrence. Schneider is familiar with SHSU, however, going 5-5 against the Bearkats as the head coach at Stephen F. Austin when both programs competed in the Southland Conference.
