Lawrence, Kan. - The Kansas Jayhawks are back in action and hitting the road as they prepare to compete in the NCAA Midwest Regional meet, hosted by Bradley University on Friday, Nov. 15 at Newman Golf Course in Peoria, Illinois.
The Kansas women's team will be the first to compete, with the 6K race set to start at 11:00 a.m. CT and the men's 10K race beginning at 12:00 p.m. CT.
National Championship qualifiers will be determined following the regional cross country championships. The top two teams from each of the nine regions will automatically qualify, totaling 18 teams. An additional 13 teams will be selected at-large to round out the field.
In addition to the team qualifiers, 38 individual runners will earn spots at the championships. The top four finishers in each region who are not part of a qualifying team will automatically advance, while the remaining individual spots will be filled through an at-large selection process
At last year's NCAA Midwest Regional in Stillwater, Oklahoma, Kansas seniors Chandler Gibbens and Lona Latema delivered standout performances, each finishing in the Top 10 and earning spots at the 2023 NCAA Cross Country Nationals, along with USTFCCCA All-Region honors. It marked the first time since 2015 that Kansas had both a male and female athlete qualify for nationals in the same season. Latema led the women's team with a third-place finish in the 6K, while Gibbens took sixth in the men's 10K with a time of 30:21.2. Kansas finished ninth overall on the men's side, ahead of strong competitors like Missouri and Iowa, and placed 16th in the women's division.
