LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Kansas Jayhawks are set to spend Thanksgiving in the U.S. Virgin Islands, where the Jayhawks will play three games at the Paradise Jam on Nov. 28-30.
Kansas opens up against Pittsburgh on Thursday at 11:30 a.m. CT before taking on Northern Iowa on Friday at 2 p.m. CT and closing out the event against Auburn on Saturday at 2 p.m. CT.
All three games will be played at the Sports and Fitness Center in Saint Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, with streaming available on ESPN+ with Kevin Lehman (play-by-play) and Brad Wells (analyst) on the call. Fans can also listen to the game on the Jayhawk Radio Network from Learfield, with Steven Davis calling the action.
This will be KU's second all-time appearance in the Paradise Jam and first since 2013. That season, Kansas went 1-2, opening the event with a 68-63 win over Central Michigan followed by defeats against Xavier (64-59) and No. 8 Duke (40-73).
Kansas is in the midst of a four-game stretch of neutral site games, which began on Nov. 20 at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The Jayhawks suffered their first defeat of the season that night, falling 71-58 to reigning national runner-up Iowa, despite a combined 48 points from
S'Mya Nichols (26) and
Elle Evans (22).
Prior to the Iowa defeat, Kansas had opened the season 4-0 wins over Lindenwood, Sam Houston, Omaha and North Alabama by an average of 16.0 points per game. It marked the Jayhawks third 4-0 start in the past four seasons and the sixth under head coach
Brandon Schneider.
While at the Paradise Jam, Kansas will be facing opponents with a combined record of 11-4. The Jayhawks will meet both Pitt and Auburn for the first time in women's basketball, while KU carries a 5-0 all-time record against Northern Iowa into Friday's matchup, which will be the first between the programs since the first round of the 2006 WNIT.
A Preseason All-Big 12 selection, Nichols has been exceptional to start her sophomore season, scoring at least 16 points in all five games this season. She's coming off a season-high 26 points against Iowa, which raised her scoring average to 19.6 points per game for the season, which ranks No. 6 in the Big 12.
Evans has scored in double figures in each of the past three games, including back-to-back games of 20-plus points after going for 22 vs. Iowa. She is now KU's second-leading scorer at 12.0 points per game and she's hit a team-leading nine three-pointers, seven of which have come in the past two games.
Sania Copeland has started all five games for the Jayhawks and been one of KU's most consistent performers. Copeland is averaging 7.0 points, 3.6 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.2 steals per game, while shooting a team-leading 52.0 percent (13-25) from the field and 50.0 percent (7-14) from three-point range.
