LAWRENCE, Kan. – The 57th season of intercollegiate women's basketball at the University of Kansas tips off on Wednesday, Nov. 6, at Allen Fieldhouse as the Jayhawks host Lindenwood.
Tipoff from Allen Fieldhouse is set for 6:30 p.m. CT and the game will be streamed on ESPN+ with Josh Klingler (play-by-play) and Brenda VanLengen (analyst) on the call. Fans can also listen to the game on the Jayhawk Radio Network from Learfield, with Steven Davis and David Lawrence calling the action.
Kansas was picked to finish eighth in the Big 12 preseason poll, which is voted on by the leagues head coaches. Under the direction of 10th-year head coach
Brandon Schneider, the Jayhawks return two starters from its 2023-24 team, which finished 20-13 overall and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Kansas has won at least 20 games and won a game in the postseason in each of the past three seasons.
The Jayhawks played one exhibition game, defeating Washburn 81-54 on Nov. 1 at Allen Fieldhouse. Kansas was led by
Brittany Harshaw, who scored a game-high 20 points, while
Elle Evans and
S'Mya Nichols scored 16 points apiece.
This will be the first all-time meeting between Kansas and Lindenwood, who was picked to finish seventh in the Ohio Valley Conference this season. In head coach Amy Eagan's first season at the helm, the Lions finished 7-21 overall and 5-13 in conference play. The 2024-25 season will be Lindenwood's fourth competing as an NCAA Division I institution.
The Jayhawks return two starters from last season, led by Nichols, the standout sophomore guard from Overland Park. Following a stellar freshman campaign, Nichols earned a spot on the Preseason All-Big 12 Team and was named to the Naismith Women's Basketball Player of the Year Watch List. Nichols was 4-for-8 from the field and scored 16 points while adding four assists and four steals to help Kansas to its exhibition win over Washburn.
Also returning to the starting lineup is super-senior guard
Wyvette Mayberry, who is now in her third season at Kansas. Mayberry was fifth on the team in scoring (9.7 ppg) last season and tied with Nichols for the team-lead with 45 steals. Mayberry finished with five points, one assist and one steal against Washburn.
Kansas had 10 players in the scoring column in its exhibition victory against Washburn. Harshaw (20), Evans (16) and Nichols (16) combined for 52 points, while Mayberry and
Regan Williams rounded out the starting five. Williams finished with six points and a game-high 10 rebounds in her first action as a Jayhawk.
Laia Conesa was KU's leading scorer off the bench, finishing with six points and six rebounds, while
Sania Copeland added five points, three assists and two blocked shots in 18 minutes off the bench.
