LAWRENCE, Kan. – Shiyun Lai, Lezli Sisung, Lauren Gryboski and Lize van Leeuwen were named to the College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Spring Individual Scholar All-America Teams, the association announced Wednesday.
Reflecting on the 2023-24 season, Lai earned first-team honors, while Sisung, Gryboski and van Leeuwen got second-team recognition.
The postseason awards continue for Lai, a liberal arts and sciences major from Guangdong Province, China. An All-Big 12 First Team selection and CSCAA All-American Second Team member, Lai had arguably the most successful freshman diving season in program history. Lai earned All-American Honorable Mention in both the one and three-meter diving events at the 2024 NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships. Prior to the NCAA Championships, Lai notched a first-place finish in the three-meter event at the Big 12 Championships, diving for an impressive 406.20 points to become just the third diver and seventh Jayhawk overall to win an individual title at the Big 12 Championships. With her performance at the conference championship, Lai was named the Big 12 Women's Newcomer Diver of the Meet.
Sisung, an environmental studies major from Friendswood, Texas, is making a second-straight appearance on the Scholar All-America Team. At the conclusion of the 2023-24 season, Sisung earned All-Big 12 Second Team recognition. Sisung has proven to be a leader in the pool for Kansas after qualifying for a championship event in the 100-yard backstroke at the Big 12 Championship and notching a sixth-place finish with a time of 53.98. Also at the conference championship, Sisung was a member of the 200-yard medley relay team which finished fourth (1:39.48) and earned Kansas 52 points. Earlier this season, Sisung picked up an NCAA B Cut in the 100-yard backstroke after racing a time of 53.71 at the Mizzou Invite.
An anthropology and biology major, Gryboski graduated from the University of Kansas in May 2024. Voted on by her teammates and coaching staff, Gryboski earned the "Academic Award" at the team's end-of-season banquet. At the 2024 NCAA Zone Diving Championships, Gryboski was the lone Jayhawk to compete in all three diving events (1m, 3m, Platform). For her senior campaign, Gryboski put together three fourth-place finishes and was a vocal leader for the Kansas diving squad.
Van Leeuwen, who was named to the CSCAA Academic All-District Team back in April, is a philosophy major entering her junior year. Along with Gryboski and Lai, van Leeuwen competed at the 2024 NCAA Zone Diving Championships. Prior to the championships, the Hazerswoude-Rijndijk, Netherlands, native finished in ninth place in the one-meter event at the Big 12 Championships, also winning the consolation final.
To qualify for First-Team Scholar All-America, student-athletes must have earned a GPA of 3.5 or higher and participated in their national championship. Second-Team selections must have also earned a 3.5 GPA or higher and met a "B" time standard for the national championship or qualified for a diving zone qualification meet.
Additionally, Sisung, Gryboski and van Leeuwen were named to the 2024 Winter Academic All-Big 12 First Team in June.
