LAWRENCE, Kan. – Freshman right-handed pitcher
Dominic Voegele became the first Kansas player ever to be named a D1Baseball Freshman All-American when the Big 12 Freshman of the Year was selected to the First Team on Friday.
Voegele, who has already been named a First Team Freshman All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, and a Second Team pick by Perfect Game, shined for coach
Dan Fitzgerald and pitching coach
Brandon Scott in his first season as a Jayhawk. Voegele went 7-2 with a 3.89 ERA across 15 starts.
The Columbia, Illinois, native punched out 80 batters – compared to just 29 walks – in 81.0 innings pitched this past season. He allowed three earned runs or fewer in 12 of his 15 starts and finished the regular season tied for third in the Big 12 in wins (seven), tied for fifth in ERA (3.32), seventh in opponent batting average (.228) and tied for seventh in innings pitched (76.0).
Following his dazzling debut season for the Jayhawks, Voegele joined the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team's training camp and hurled five shutout innings over two appearances against the best college bats in the country.
The 2023 Arizona Diamondbacks draft pick is the ninth Kansas player in program history to receive freshman All-American honors. He joins
Kodey Shojinaga (2023), James Cosentino (2017), Devin Foyle (2016), Stephen Villines (2014), Wally Marciel (2007), John Nelson (1998 honorable mention), Clint Wyrick (1998 honorable mention) and Jamie Splittorf (1993).
