LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas women's basketball will meet Arizona State for the first time as Big 12 Conference members when the Sun Devils come to Lawrence on Thursday, Jan. 16.
Â
Tipoff from Allen Fieldhouse is set for 6:30 p.m. CT and the game will be televised on ESPN+ with Josh Klingler (play-by-play) and
Wayne Simien (analyst) on the call. Fans can also listen to the game on the Jayhawk Radio Network from Learfield, with Steven Davis and David Lawrence calling the action.
Â
Kansas comes into the contest with an 11-5 (1-4 Big 12) record following an 84-76 defeat at Colorado on Jan. 11. Each of the five teams that KU has faced in Big 12 play has a record above .500 in conference action, and the Jayhawks are the only team to hand Oklahoma State a league loss, defeating the Cowgirls 75-66 on Jan. 4 in Stillwater. KU went 10-1 in non-conference play, including a 7-0 record at home.
Â
The Jayhawks are now tasked with facing Big 12 newcomer Arizona State, who comes to town with a record of 8-9 (2-3 Big 12) following home losses last weekend against Iowa State and Baylor. The Sun Devils previously picked up league wins over Texas Tech and at Houston.
Â
Arizona State is No. 8 in the Big 12 in scoring, averaging 72.6 points per game and the Sun Devils feature the league's top free throw shooting team at 77.5 percent from the stripe. ASU has four players averaging in double figures, led by Jalyn Brown (16.8 ppg) and Tyi Skinner (16.7).
Â
Thursday's matchup will be just the fourth all-time between Kansas and Arizona State in women's basketball and the first since 2001. ASU leads the all-time series 2-1, but Kansas holds a 1-0 edge over the Sun Devils in Allen Fieldhouse with an 81-65 victory on Jan. 2, 2000.
Â
Elle Evans led the Jayhawks with a season-high 28 points at Colorado, hitting 10-of-19 field goals and 7-of-12 three-pointers in the game. The seven made threes matches a career high for Evans and is tied for the third-most in a single game in Kansas women's basketball history. She becomes the seventh Jayhawks to hit seven threes in a game and the first since Jessica Washington in 2017.
Â
S'Mya Nichols had her streak of scoring more than 20 points snapped at Colorado as she was held to 15 points. Nichols attempted just four field goals, going 3-of-4, while hitting 8-of-9 free throws and adding six assists and two rebounds. Nichols is the Big 12's No. 2 leading scorer at 21.6 points per game, which ranks No. 9 nationally, and she continues to lead the country in both free throws made (142) and attempted (172).
Â
Regan Williams finished one point away from her career high at Colorado as she totaled 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting. For Williams, this was the fifth time this season scoring in double figures and the second time in the past three games. Williams is shooting 55.3 percent (57-103) from the field, and he is now KU's No. 3 leading scorer at 8.1 points per game while leading the Jayhawks with 5.3 rebounds per game.
Â
Laia Conesa and
Sania Copeland scored six points apiece at Colorado. The backcourt duo is ranked fourth and fifth on the team in scoring, averaging 6.6 and 6.2 points per game, respectively.
