LAWRENCE, Kan. - Former Kansas track and field star Tyce Smith passed away at the age of 83 on Saturday, October 25th, 2025.Â
Smith was a remarkable high jumper for the Jayhawks and a KU Hall of Fame inductee. During his career at Kansas, Smith was a Big Eight Conference Champion in 1964 and helped the 1965 team place tenth in the NCAA Indoor Championships under head coach Bill Easton.Â
Prior to Kansas, Smith graduated from Oswego East High School in 1960. After graduating from KU in 1965 with a B.S., he pursued a J.D. degree at Washburn University, which he completed in 1968. He was admitted as a member of the Kansas State Bar in 1968 and became a founding partner of Smith & Turley Law Offices. Smith spent over 30 years practicing law in a handful of areas, while still always cheering for and supporting his Jayhawks.
