LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Kansas Jayhawks are back in action Sunday at Allen Fieldhouse as non-conference play continues with a matchup against the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles.
Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. CT and the game will be broadcast on ESPN+ with Brenda VanLengen (play-by-play) and
Wayne Simien (analyst) on the call. Fans can also listen to the game on the Jayhawk Radio Network from Learfield, with Steven Davis and David Lawrence calling the action.
Kansas improved to 5-0 Wednesday evening with a 63-57 victory over Minnesota, a second consecutive win over a power conference opponent. The Jayhawks previously dispatched of Missouri with an 82-77 victory in the StorageMart Border Showdown on Nov. 15 at the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City.
Junior guard
S'Mya Nichols led the Jayhawks with 24 points in the win over Minnesota, while senior forward
Lilly Meister recorded her first double-double as a Jayhawk with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Senior guard
Elle Evans also reached double figures with 11 points and sophomore forward
Regan Williams chipped in with eight points and four rebounds.
The Jayhawks are now 5-0 for the fifth time in 11 seasons under
Brandon Schneider and the first time since starting 10-0 to open the 2022-23 campaign. KU's best start under Schneider was an 11-0 beginning to the 2019-20 campaign.
Kansas has used a different starting lineup in each of its first five games, with Nichols and Meister the only two players to start all five games.
Nichols has scored at least 20 points in four of KU's first five games, including a season-high 24 against Minnesota. Against the Golden Gophers, Nichols was a perfect 12-for-12 from the free throw line, marking the seventh time in program history a player shot 12 or more free throws without a miss. During the Minnesota game, Nichols moved up another spot on KU's all-time scoring list, surpassing Lisa Dougherty (1985-88) for No. 26 with 1,167 career points.
Meister set new season highs with 11 points and 10 rebounds in the win over her home state school, Minnesota. She recorded her second career double-double and increased her scoring average to 8.0 points per game. Meister is KU's leader in rebounder with 7.2 per game and tied for the team lead with three blocked shots.
Evans continues her hot shooting from long range after hitting 3-of-4 three-pointers vs. Minnesota. Evans is shooting 62.5 percent (15-24) from long range, which leads the Big 12 and ranks sixth nationally. She is KU's No. 3 scorer, averaging 11.0 points per game.
Williams played a career-high 36 minutes in the Minnesota game, totaling eight points and four rebounds while making her second start of the season. In her first start, Williams recorded her fourth career double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds against Lamar on Nov. 12.
Oral Roberts comes to Lawrence with a record of 2-4 and riding a four-game slide following a 103-58 defeat at Nebraska on Wednesday night.
Sunday's matchup will be the 17th all-time between Kansas and ORU in a series dating back to 1977. KU holds a 15-1 all-time lead in the series, including an 11-1 record against the Golden Eagles in games played at Allen Fieldhouse.
