Kansas (15-11, 5-10 Big 12) got back in the win column on Tuesday night with a 63-58 victory over UCF at Allen Fieldhouse. The Jayhawks were led by
S'Mya Nichols, who scored a game-high 20 points while hitting all seven of her free throw attempts.
Elle Evans (15 points),
Brittany Harshaw (12) and
Regan Williams (11) also reached in double figures, with those four players combining to score 58 of KU's 63 points in the contest.
Â
Nichols has now scored at least 20 points in 16 games this season after doing so in each of the past two games. That mark ranks fifth in school history for the most 20-point games in a single season. Nichols already holds the school record for made free throws in a season, a mark that currently sits at 203 after she became the eighth player in Big 12 history to surpass 200 made free throws in a season during the UCF game.
Â
Nichols became the 33rd player in program history to reach the 1,000-point milestone during the Iowa State game on Feb. 15. She scored her 1,000th point in her 58th career game, becoming the second-fastest player to reach the career milestone behind only legendary Jayhawk Lynette Woodard. Nichols enters Saturday's game No. 33 on Kansas' all-time scoring list with 1,021 career points, three behind Tracy Claxton (1980-82) for 32nd.
Â
Evans had 15 points vs. UCF, hitting all eight of her free throw attempts and one three-pointer in the win. Evans is 61-of-152 (40.1 percent) from three-point range this season and ranks No. 2 on the team with an average of 14.0 points per game. She is currently tied for 11th on KU's single season three-pointers list, needing one more to move into the top 10.
Â
Williams scored 11 points vs. UCF, including nine in the fourth quarter. She was 4-for-6 from the field and scored the go-ahead basket in the final minute, giving KU the lead for good. Williams is KU's No. 3 leading scorer with 8.5 points per game and leads the Jayhawks with 4.9 rebounds per game, while shooting a team-leading 55.1 percent (98-178) from the field.
Â
No. 12 Kansas State is 24-4 on the year and 12-3 in Big 12 play following a 70-57 loss at No. 17 West Virginia on Monday. KSU features the highest scoring offense in the Big 12 at 80.4 points per game and leads the nation with 21.9 assists per game.
Â
Kansas State won the first matchup of the season 91-64 on Feb. 2 in Lawrence. The Wildcats lead the all-time series 81-51, but the two teams have split the season series in each of the last four seasons.
