MANHATTAN, Kan. – A low-scoring first quarter proved to be too much for Kansas to overcome as it dropped the Dillons Sunflower Showdown, 90-60, to No. 12 Kansas State on Saturday at Bramlage Coliseum.
Kansas got a combined 22 points from the freshmen duo of
Zoe Canfield and
Regan Williams, with Canfield scoring a career-high 12 points on 4-for-5 shooting from three-point range. Williams added 10 points and three rebounds, marking the 12th game this season finishing in double figures.
Elle Evans added 15 points as she hit four three-pointers and moved into the top-10 in school history for single season threes made while
Sania Copeland contributed a season high five assists.
As a team, Kansas finished with 14 assists on 20 made baskets while going a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line and splashing at a rate of 50.0% from 10-for-20 shooting beyond the arc.
With the loss, Kansas falls to 15-12 (5-11 Big 12) on the year with two games remaining in the regular season. No. 12 Kansas State is now 25-4 (13-3 Big 12).
"There were times I thought we were good enough to compete offensively in both halves but we just couldn't string together enough stops," Kansas coach
Brandon Schneider said postgame. "I couldn't be more proud of
Zoe Canfield and her play today. It's easy to look at a stat sheet and say she made shots, but it was so much more than that. I thought she played fearless and free, took open shots and tried to do everything that we coach, which is all that we can ask for as a staff."
After Kansas State opened up a 26-12 lead after the first quarter, Kansas played them evenly in the second. The Jayhawks knocked down four three-pointers in the second period, including a trio from Canfield, who had surpassed her career high in scoring during the first half. A late triple by KSU allowed the Wildcats to lead 46-31 at the break.
Kansas State scored at least 20 points in each quarter and added to its advantage, outscoring Kansas 44-29 in the second half to secure the season sweep in the Dillons Sunflower Showdown.
