TEMPE, Ariz. – Kansas baseball fell 9-2 to Arizona State in the first game of the series on Friday evening at Phoenix Municipal Stadium. Kansas drew eight walks in the game, but the Jayhawks were limited to only four hits offensively. Sophomore
Dominic Voegele got the start for Kansas and suffered the loss after allowing seven runs over 5.2 innings.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Kansas (17-5, 2-2 Big 12) started the game in the first with a great opportunity by loading the bases with no outs but was unable to score.
• Arizona State (15-7, 3-1 Big 12) was able to take advantage of a couple runners on base in the first. The Sun Devils took a 1-0 lead on an RBI fielder's choice by Nu'u Contrades.
• ASU was able to double its lead in the second inning with a Josiah Cromwick solo home run.
• Cromwick's next at-bat came in the fourth inning and he hit his second homer of the game. This one was a two-run homer to make it a 4-0 Arizona State lead.
• The Jayhawks were able to get on the board in the fifth inning when
Derek Cerda scored on a fielding error.
• The Sun Devils added three runs in the sixth inning on an RBI single from Kyle Walker and a two-run single by Contrades. That pushed the Arizona State lead to 7-1.
• KU was able to get one run back in the top of the seventh on a two-out RBI double by
Brady Counsell. The run brought the score to 7-2.
• Arizona State tacked on two runs in the bottom of the seventh with a sacrifice fly and RBI single to stretch the lead to 9-2.
