LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Kansas Jayhawks are one of four teams who will open the 2025 NCAA Division I volleyball season at the Opening Spike Classic, a newly created blockbuster event hosted by Wisconsin Athletics.
Â
Held over Labor Day Weekend at the Kohl Center in Madison, Wisconsin, the Opening Spike Showcase will showcase powerhouse matchups as Kansas takes on Wisconsin on Aug. 29 and Creighton on Aug. 31. Texas is also competing in the tournament, giving the event four programs with strong postseason pedigrees and a combined five national titles. Each match will be televised live on the Big Ten Network, while also streaming on the Fox Sports App.
Â
"What a great opportunity for our program to be a part of the Opening Spike Classic," first-year Kansas coach
Matt Ulmer said. "Four of the top teams in our sport will be competing in front of a great fan base on national television. Our team will learn a lot about ourselves early in the season by playing Wisconsin and Creighton and seeing Texas. To compete for championships, we need to find matches and venues that challenge us at a championship level. That's exactly what we will get with this tournament. I want to encourage our fans to make the trip to Madison for what will be one of the best weekends of volleyball in the country."
Â
Ulmer enters his first season in Lawrence after being named the seventh head coach in Kansas volleyball history in January. It was previously announced that KU will compete in the AVCA First Serve tournament, facing Vanderbilt on Aug. 23 in Lincoln, Nebraska, before matching up against Penn State on Aug. 25 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Â
Presale access for fans interested in attending the Opening Spike Classic will begin on Tuesday, April 29, with general public on-sale launching Wednesday, April 30.
