TULSA, Okla. – The Kansas men's golf team wrapped up the first 36 holes of the Big 12 Championship on Tuesday at Southern Hills Country Club. The Jayhawks sit in 11th place at +32 after shooting team scores of 295 and 297.Â
"We played a little loose today and didn't execute golf shots," said Kansas head coach Jamie Bermel. "This is a very difficult golf course and I didn't think we were very composed and showed a lot of patience. We need five guys playing well and if we do we can certainly move up the leaderboard. A lot of golf left to be played."
Arizona State leads the 15-team field at 1-over par, with Oklahoma State four shots back in second at +5. TCU (+20), Colorado (+21) and Houston (+22) round out the top five.Â
ROUND ONEÂ
Kansas opened the 72-hole Big 12 Championship with a team score of 295 (+15) in the first round.Â
Junior Will King led the way for Kansas Tuesday morning, carding a 2-over round of 72. He got off to a strong start, birdieing the 500-yard, par-four second hole. After making the turn at three over, King bounced back with two birdies on the back nine to finish 1-under on his closing stretch.Â
Freshman Ty Lasley, making his Big 12 Championship debut, played steady throughout the day. He opened with a 3-over 38 on the front nine, then gained momentum with back-to-back birdies on holes 13 and 14, en route to a 3-over 73.Â
Junior Luke Honner was consistent throughout his round, recording 14 pars. He turned in a team-best front nine score of 2-over and matched that number on the back nine to finish with a 4-over 74.Â
Sophomore Max Jelinek and senior Gunnar Broin also contributed solid stretches of play, but a handful of bogeys impacted their scores. Jelinek finished with a 6-over 76, while Broin closed out the round at 8-over (78).Â
ROUND TWOÂ
The Jayhawks teed off for the second round on hole 10, firing a team score of 297 (+17).Â
Broin charged the Jayhawks in the second round, carding a 1-over 71 for the team's lowest score of the day. After opening the event with a 78, Broin bounced back with three birdies in his second round and currently sits tied for 41st at +9.Â
A birdie on the 656-yard, par-five fifth hole was the highlight of Honner's second-round 73 (+3). Honner enters the third round at +7 and tied for 30th individually.Â
Lasley posted a 6-over 76 in Tuesday's second round, highlighted by two birdies. One came on the 632-yard, par-five 13th hole—the same hole he birdied in the first round.Â
King couldn't get much going in the second round, posting a 7-over 77 without a birdie on his card. He sits tied for 41st at +9 alongside Broin.Â
After opening the event with a 76, Jelinek carded a 77 (+7) Tuesday afternoon and is now +13 and in a tie for 62nd.Â
