LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas men's golf coach
Jamie Bermel has been announced as one of three individuals who will be enshrined in the Central College Hall of Honor. The enshrinement banquet will take place on Friday, September 26 as part of Central's homecoming celebration.
Â
"I was very surprised when the athletic director called with the news," Bermel said. "I am honored and humbled by the award and very excited to join my older brother John in the Hall of Honor. Central College was definitely the right choice for me, and I have a lot of lifelong friends from the golf team!"
Â
Bermel, who has served as the head coach at Kansas since 2012, has led the Jayhawks to a program-record nine straight NCAA Tournament appearances. In 13 seasons at KU, he's guided the Jayhawks to 17 regular season tournament titles, most recently the Hawkeye Invitational in Iowa City back in April. Bermel has also guided Kansas to two NCAA Championship appearances, most recently in 2022.
Â
Prior to Kansas. Bermel spent time as the head coach at Drake (1992-97), Iowa State (1997-99) and Colorado State (1999-2012). He's led his teams to a combined 24 NCAA Tournaments and four NCAA Championship appearances in his career.
Â
Located in Pella, Iowa, Central College is an NCAA Division III institution where Bermel competed collegiately. While at Central, Bermel helped the Dutch claim four Iowa Conference titles and make four NCAA Division III Championships appearances. He played in three of those NCAA tournaments as Central placed sixth in 1984, fifth in 1985 and 12th in 1986. Bermel tied for 76th in 1984, tied for 47th in 1985 and placed 23rd at the 1986 NCAA meet, receiving All-America honorable mention. A team co-captain in 1985-86, he was given Central's Golden Putter Award as the most improved player that year. Bermel received all-conference recognition in 1985 by placing seventh at the league tourney.
Â
After graduating from Central, Bermel received a master's degree at Purdue in 1988 and worked in recreational sports at the Michigan from 1989-91 before joining the staff at Drake. As a Hall of Honor inductee, Bermel will join his older brother John Bermel, who was inducted in 2013.
