LAWRENCE, Kan. — The No. 15 Kansas Jayhawks swept the Kansas State Wildcats 25-17, 25-21, 25-20 on Friday night in front of a record-breaking crowd of 8,058 in Allen Fieldhouse.
Grace Nelson led the Jayhawk offense with 10 kills, and Reese Ptacek and Taylor Stanley each added nine. Reese Messer tallied 24 assists and directed the attack to a .309 hitting percentage.
Aisha Aiono recorded six blocks, Stanley added four, and Ptacek and Messer each chipped in two. Olivia Hasbrook anchored the back-row defense with 15 digs, Nelson added eight, and Messer and Logan Bell each had seven.
After a back-and-forth start, Kansas took advantage of back-to-back Kansas State errors to build a 4-2 lead. The Jayhawks didn't relinquish the lead for the remainder of the set, and a Stanley ace and a slide from Ptacek extended the advantage to 7-4. Bell earned her first point of the match on an ace before Stanley got through the block for her fifth kill of the night to give KU a 15-10 lead at the media timeout.
Kansas State scored back-to-back points out of the timeout, but Ptacek and Messer stopped the run with a left-side block, and an Aiono kill out of the middle made it 19-14. The Wildcats took a timeout after Messer's ace extended the lead to 20-14. Nelson's kill out of the timeout kept the momentum going, and Ptacek's swing from the middle eventually closed out the set 25-17.
Kansas jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the second set, and after the teams traded points, a kill and a block by Aiono extended the advantage to 9-7. Following a long rally, Ptacek scored on a tip and again on a swing through the gap for a 15-12 lead at the media timeout.
The teams traded points out of the timeout before the Jayhawks pulled away behind a kill from Aiono and Nelson's serving. The Wildcats responded with four straight points to make it 21-19 and force a Kansas timeout. Ptacek answered with a kill out of the timeout, and Nelson's kill from the left side closed out the set 25-21.
Kansas took a 5-1 lead in the third set behind Nelson's serving, and a Ptacek kill extended the advantage to 7-2. Nelson found her way through the block to make it 10-5, part of a 12-5 lead that forced a Kansas State timeout. The Jayhawks kept the momentum and carried a 15-7 lead into the media timeout. Stanley recorded her ninth kill of the night, and Ptacek put away an overpass to extend the advantage to 19-10. The Wildcats battled back with a late 5-0 run before kills by Bell and Nelson sealed the 25-20 set and the sweep.
The Jayhawks return to action Sunday when they face the Iowa State Cyclones at noon CT in Ames, Iowa.
