LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas men's basketball coach
Bill Self has been named one of 15 coaches to the 2026 Werner Ladder Naismith Men's College Coach of the Year Watch List Presented by AXIA Time, the Atlanta Tipoff Club announced today.
The Naismith Coach of the Year began in 1987, and Self was the 2012 honoree when he guided the Jayhawks to an NCAA runner-up finish. In his 23
rd season at Kansas, Self has been seven-time Naismith Coach of the Year finalist – 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003 at Illinois; and 2009, 2012, and 2017 while at Kansas.
In 2025-26, Self has guided No. 8 Kansas to a 20-6 overall record, including a 10-3 Big 12 mark as KU sits one game behind Big 12 leaders Houston and Arizona in the league standings with five conference games remaining. KU's No. 8 Associated Press ranking is its highest this season and the Jayhawks have been ranked in the AP top 10 the last two weeks.
Self is known for defense and this season Kansas leads the Big 12 in field goal percentage defense at 38.4%, which is fifth nationally, and three-point field goal percentage defense at 29.7%, which is 17th nationally. KU also leads the Big 12 in blocked shots (6.2), which is third nationally.
Self is Kansas' all-time winngest coach with a 629-163 record. He has guided KU to four Final Fours and two NCAA titles in 2008 and 2022. Addtionally, Self has won 16 Big 12 regular-season championships and eight Big 12 Tournament titles while at Kansas.
Self is in his 33rd season overall with an 836-267 record. He is one of only four active coaches in NCAA D1 with 800 or career wins joining Rick Barnes, John Calipari, and Kelvin Sampson.
