Former Kansas Head Coach Bud Moore Passes Away at 86

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas football mourns the loss of former Kansas football head coach Bud Moore who passed away on Monday in Lynnville, Tennessee. Moore was 86 years old and passed away with family by his side.

Robert "Bud" Moore coached at Kansas from 1975-78 and was the 1975 Big Eight Coach of the Year after leading the Jayhawks to a 7-5 record and appearance in the 1975 Sun Bowl. Under Moore, Kansas delivered one of the program's most memorable wins, upsetting eventual national champion Oklahoma 23-3 and ending the Sooners' 37-game unbeaten streak.

Moore also led Kansas to a winning record in 1976, finishing the season at 6-5 and leading Kansas to a national ranking.

A standout end at the University of Alabama under Hall of Fame coach Bear Bryant from 1958-60, Moore transitioned into coaching following his playing career. He served as an assistant at Gadsden High School in Alabama before coaching stints at the University of Kentucky, Texas A&M, North Carolina and Alabama, working with offensive lines, running backs and coordinating offenses.

In 1996, Moore was named recipient of the Paul W. Bryant Alumni-Athlete Award, given by the University of Alabama in recognition of character, contribution to society, professional achievement and service to others. Moore was later inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in 2019.
