Owens’ Huge Day Leads Kansas to Series Win and 9-8 Walk-Off Victory
3/21/2026 7:31:00 PM | Baseball
Owens hit a three-run homer in the fourth inning, singled in the sixth, crushed a grand slam in the bottom of the eighth and delivered the walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the ninth. His eight RBIs were one shy of the program record and the most since Chase Jans had nine RBIs during the 2023 season.
The game went back and forth with Kansas leading 4-1 after four innings and then trailing 6-4 midway through the eighth. The Jayhawks pushed across four runs in the bottom of the eighth on Owens' grand slam to take a two-run lead. Then, Houston tied it on a two-run homer in the top of the ninth. With two outs and runners on second and third, Owens hit a ball on the ground towards the middle of the field and beat the throw from the second baseman to win the game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Tyson LeBlanc picked up where he left off on Friday night by hitting a solo homer in the first inning to give Kansas a 1-0 advantage.
• Houston (12-10, 1-4 Big 12) evened the game at 1-1 in the third inning on an RBI double down the left field line.
• Kansas (14-8, 3-2 Big 12) grabbed the lead back in the bottom of the fourth on a three-run homer by Owens.
• The Cougars had an answer to the three runs with four runs of their own in the top of the fifth. An RBI single and a fielding error scored the first two runs. Riley Jackson hit a two-run homer for the final two runs of the inning. All four runs scored with two outs and it put Houston ahead 5-4.
• Easton Winfield hit a solo home run to leadoff the eighth inning and make it a 6-4 Houston advantage.
• After a flyout to start the inning, Kansas loaded the bases. Owens came up to the plate with one out and worked a 3-1 count. He smashed a ball to straightaway center field that cleared the batter's eye for a grand slam. That put Kansas ahead 8-6.
• Houston did not go down without a fight in the ninth. With one on and one out, Tre Broussard hit a game-tying two-run homer to make it an 8-8 game.
• As the Jayhawks have done in the past, they found a way to win it in walk-off fashion. Owens was the hero once again with a two-out, RBI infield single to score LeBlanc and win the game.

QUOTABLES & NOTABLES
"Baseball is such an up and down sport of punch thrown and punch taken. It's literally always about just responding to whatever is in front of you. The guys did a really nice job of doing that. I think the thing that fires me up is that there's just a belief and an energy and an excitement inside the dugout. The guys never think the game is over. Even when (Houston) got the two-run shot there to tie it in the ninth, it was just immediately on to this is a great opportunity for us to walk someone off. Have to love the youthful mind and all the beauty that brings to the optimism of a moment. It was a great win. Really proud of these guys and proud of how some of these guys stepped up." – Head Coach Dan Fitzgerald
"It felt pretty good today. I mean I've just been sticking to the process for what our coaches have been putting us through every day. Day in and day out, just trusting them and trusting myself. I was just thinking beat it out. Ground ball, I was just trying to get to first so we win the game. I wish it was a home run, but I'll take a single there too." – Tyson Owens
• Kansas has won four consecutive games. The Jayhawks have scored 49 runs over the four games.
• Kansas improved to 14-8 on the season and 3-2 in Big 12 play.
• Kansas recorded its third walk-off win of the season. The Jayhawks have three walk offs in seven opportunities.
• Owens finished with career highs of eight RBIs, four hits and two home runs. He is the first Jayhawk with at least eight RBIs since Chase Jans had nine RBIs on April 16, 2023 vs. Kansas State. Owens is the second Kansas player with a multi-homer game this season (Dariel Osoria).
• LeBlanc hit his fifth home run of the season. He has homered in back-to-back games for the first time this season.
