LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas Softball's home opener is finally here as the Jayhawks return to Arrocha Ballpark this weekend to host Utah State in a three-game series. Kansas will play a doubleheader on Friday with first pitches scheduled for 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., before closing the weekend Saturday at 2 p.m.
Kansas enters the weekend with strong momentum, holding a 15–7 record through the opening stretch of the season. The Jayhawks have found their rhythm early, showing consistency at the plate and in the circle as they return to Lawrence for the first time this year.
That momentum continued Wednesday night when Kansas earned a dominant 9–1 run-rule victory over Wichita State, marking the Jayhawks' ninth run-rule win of the season.
Kansas jumped on the Shockers early, as Ella Boyer and Hailey Cripe each launched first-inning home runs to set the tone offensively. Timely hitting from Kadence Stafford, Presley Limbaugh, and Campbell Bagshaw helped extend the lead, while Kaelee Washington controlled the game in the circle, allowing just one run over five innings.
Boyer has been one of Kansas' most productive hitters early in the season, leading the team with a .393 batting average, six home runs and 21 RBIs through 22 games, while also recording eight doubles and a triple.
In the circle, Washington has continued to provide steady innings for the Jayhawks, earning the win against Wichita State and contributing to a pitching staff that has helped Kansas secure several early-season run-rule victories.
"We're really excited to finally be back in Lawrence and play in front of our fans," head coach Jennifer McFalls said. "This team has built a lot of momentum over the first part of the season, and now it's about continuing to grow, compete, and bring that same energy to our home field."
Last season, Kansas sat at 12–10 before its home opener, marking a three-game improvement compared to this year's start.
In the all-time series, Utah State leads 4–2, with all previous meetings taking place at neutral-site tournaments. From 1984 to 1989, Kansas was unable to score a run against the Aggies before breaking through with a 9–0 victory in 1994. Utah State responded with an 11–3 win in 2000, but Kansas won the most recent matchup, run-ruling the Aggies 8–0 on Feb. 9, 2002.
Now, with momentum on its side and the home crowd behind it, Kansas will look to continue its strong start and open the home portion of the schedule with another statement performance.
