Kansas Falls 4-0 to Oklahoma in NCAA Tournament First Round

NORMAN, Okla. – Kansas women's tennis battled in the first round of the NCAA Tournament against No. 6-seed Oklahoma on Saturday afternoon, but ultimately fell 4-0 at the Headington Family Tennis Center in Norman, Oklahoma.
"Oklahoma is tough, especially at home, and we give them a lot of respect for today," Kansas head coach Todd Chapman said. "I thought we put ourselves in some winning positions, but we didn't finish off games or points. But when you're playing a really good team on the road, you have to take advantage of those scenarios and put some score pressure on your opponent. We just weren't able to do that today."
The Sooners were able to take an early advantage in doubles play, as Oklahoma took matches on courts one and two to take the doubles point. OU's No. 1 ranked pair of Roisin Gilheany and Gloriana Nahum defeated Kansas' Yerkezhan Arystanbekova and Anna Putilina 6-2. Court two featured KU's No. 89 ranked duo of Heike Janse van Vuuren and Kyoka Kubo and OU's No. 20 ranked team of Evialina Laskevic and Edda Mamedova. The match was tightly contested, but Laskevic and Mamedova took the match 7-5 to give Oklahoma the doubles point.
Court three went unfinished, as KU's Meg McCarty and Meriem Ben Ezzedine battled against OU's Julia Garcia Ruiz and Salakthip Ounmuang in a close 4-5 match.
In singles play, Kansas tried to force a comeback but came up short, as the Sooners took three matches to win the match. On court two, No. 37 Mamedova took down van Vuuren 6-4, 6-4. Ounmuang defeated McCarty on court four 6-0, 6-2 to take a 3-0 lead. OU won the match on six, with Nahum beating Putilina 6-1, 6-3.
Three matches went unfinished, with No. 10 Laskevic leading No. 73 Kubo 7-5, 4-0, No. 60 Ruiz leading Arystanbekova 7-6 (2), 2-1, and Chloe Noel leading her match over Nahyeong Cho 7-5, 4-1.
Kansas' season ends at 13-11 overall, as the Jayhawks made their 15th all-time NCAA Tournament appearance including their eighth under head coach Todd Chapman.
