SURPRISE, Ariz. – Following the first Big 12 Baseball Tournament title for No. 13 Kansas in 20 years, five Jayhawks were named to the Big 12 All-Tournament Team.Â
Tyson LeBlanc,
Augusto Mungarrieta,
Savion Flowers,
Dominic Voegele and
Cade Baldridge all earned a spot on the team. LeBlanc was also named the Most Outstanding Player of the tournament.
The five selections are the most ever for Kansas in a Big 12 Tournament. LeBlanc is only the second Jayhawk in program history to receive Most Outstanding Player after Matt Baty won in 2006 following the other Big 12 Tournament title for Kansas.
LeBlanc slashed .615/.667/1.154 (8-for-13), with a double, two home runs, seven RBIs, four runs scored, two walks and a stolen base in three games. The Maurice, Louisiana, native hit the game-sealing grand slam in the semifinals against Oklahoma State to tie the single-season school record with 21 home runs. LeBlanc finished that game with a career-high-tying five RBIs which also set a new school record in the Big 12 Tournament. He had multiple hits in all three games and was flawless defensively all weekend.
Mungarrieta finished the weekend hitting .462/.500/1.000 (6-for-13), with a double, two home runs, five RBIs and four runs scored. A native of Carabobo, Venezuela, Mungarrieta started the scoring in the quarterfinals with a two-run homer and he hit the second of back-to-back-to-back home runs in the championship. Mungarrieta had multiple hits in all three games, while he scored at least one run and drove in at least one run in all three contests as well.
Flowers played in all three games, including starts in left field for the final two games. The two starts came after entering the game against Baylor in the sixth inning. In the seventh, Flowers delivered an RBI single. After Baylor tied the game in the ninth inning to send it to extra innings, Flowers hit a walk-off solo home run in the 10th inning to send Kansas to the semifinals. He scored a run in all three games.
Voegele started the quarterfinals game against Baylor on Thursday. The Columbia, Illinois, native tossed seven innings and allowed only one run on four hits. Voegele recorded eight strikeouts and did not walk any batters. The quality start was Voegele's sixth in his last seven outings. Voegele moved into second place in KU history for career strikeouts (277) and into a tie for third in single-season strikeouts (108).
Baldridge played outstanding defense for the entire tournament. At the plate, he finished the tournament with four hits, two runs, one walk and a stolen base. Baldridge hit safely in all three games in Surprise.
Kansas is awaiting its fate to see if it will host a regional in Lawrence or where it will travel for the NCAA Division I Baseball Championship. The 16 regional hosts will be announced on Sunday, May 24 at 7:30 p.m. CT via NCAA social media, ESPN bottom line, NCAA press release and NCAA.com.
