LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas softball freshman catcher
Ella Boyer has been named a Top-10 Finalist for the NFCA D1 Freshman of the Year, the NFCA announced on Thursday.Â
The honor is one of many for Boyer as she was also named unanimous Big 12 Freshman of the Year, selected to the All-Big 12 First Team and Freshman team, and also named the Big 12 Freshman of the Year by USA Today Sports Network.
"It's another incredible honor for Ella to be named one of the top 10 finalists for Freshman of the Year," head coach Jennifer McFalls said. "She's put up the numbers, and has definitely proven that she deserves to be in that spot. I think it speaks volumes for where our program is at, and the direction we're going."
Boyer has been one of the biggest stars for the Kansas offense this season. Her 18 home runs broke a Kansas freshman record, and she is only four home runs from tying the Kansas all-time single season home run record of 22. To go along with her team leading 18 home runs, Boyer leads Kansas with a 1.275 OPS, 56 RBIs, .794 slugging percentage, 35 walks, and .481 on-base percentage. Boyer has also put together a near-perfect season defensively, carrying a .993 fielding percentage.
Boyer's stellar freshman season has put her among the top of the ranks nationally. Among all freshmen, she ranks sixth in home runs, seventh in RBIs, RBIs per game and slugging percentage, proving to be one of the best freshman hitters in the country.Â
Kansas softball will continue its historic season as they head into the Big 12 Softball Tournament with a first round matchup Thursday, May 7, against UCF in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma at OGE Energy Field at Devon Park.
