LAWRENCE – No. 8 Kansas Volleyball is slated to host in-state rival Kansas State in the Dillon's Sunflower Showdown inside Horejsi Family Volleyball Arena on Thursday Night.
"I know our team is excited to be back home against a quality opponent before a quick turnaround match at UCF," said Kansas Head Coach Ray Bechard. "This time of year, it's important to be intentional about the opportunity directly in front of you."
The Jayhawks come into Thursday's matchup ranked No. 8 in the country, and winners of five straight matches, and 14 of their first 15 to start the 2024 campaign. Kansas continues to rattle off impressive wins, as the Jayhawks have an undefeated mark in Big 12 play at 5-0, and the team is coming off two sweeps of West Virginia and Cincinnati, behind breakout performances from
Rhian Swanson and
Reese Ptacek.
Kansas State comes into Thursday's rivalry match 4-2 in Big 12 play despite a slow start in non-conference action. The Wildcats possess a 6-9 overall record after winning three consecutive five-set matches over Iowa State, Cincinnati, and West Virginia. Kansas State has been led by Aliyah Carter, who is currently fourth in the Big 12 in kills per set with 3.90.
These two in-state rivals have met 104 times on the volleyball court in the past, with the Wildcats holding the narrow edge in the all-time series 57-47. However, the Jayhawks have won six matches in a row against the Wildcats, as Kansas has not dropped a match at the hands of their rivals since 2020. The Jayhawks have also won eight of the last 10 against Kansas State, and the team will look to make it seven in a row inside Horejsi Family Volleyball Arena Thursday night.
Fans can tune into ESPN+ to watch Thursday's match, with Leif Lisec and Jill Dorsey-Hall calling the action. Fans can also follow along on StatBroadcast, or follow the Kansas Volleyball social media platforms for live updates throughout the match.
