AUSTIN, Texas – Kansas soccer sophomore
Caroline Castans was named Third Team Academic All-America® as selected by College Sports Communicators (CSC) on Wednesday. Castans is only the third women's soccer student-athlete in program history to be voted an Academic All-American.
"Caroline poured in a ton of work on the field and in the classroom this year," head coach Nate Lie said. "She exemplifies everything that we look for as a member of our program. We're excited that her work was recognized at the national level and are excited to continue watching her grow over the next couple seasons."
Castans has maintained a 4.0 cumulative GPA and is majoring in marketing. She started every game for Kansas and finished the season with three goals and six assists. Castans also helped Kansas record nine shutouts in 2024. A defender from Flower Mound, Texas, Castans led all Kansas field players this season with 1,889 minutes played. Her six assists were third most on the team and tied for ninth most in the Big 12.
This year, Castans has received United Soccer Coaches All-Midwest Region First Team honors, an All-Big 12 First Team selection, was voted to the Big 12 All-Tournament Team and earned CSC Academic All-District. She also was named to TopDrawerSoccer Women's National Team of the Week on Oct. 29 and Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 28.
Castans was one of 33 Division I women's soccer student-athletes to receive Academic All-America honors and one of 14 recognized that boasted a perfect 4.0 GPA. She was also one of only two sophomores across the three Division I Academic All-America teams and one of four Big 12 student-athlete recipients.
Castans joined Rylan Childers (2022) and Caroline Smith (2004 & 2005) as members of the soccer program to receive the accolade. The honor for Castans marks the 103rd occasion that a KU student-athlete has earned the honor, dating back to 1964.
To qualify for Academic All-America consideration this year, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore academically and athletically, along with having at least a 3.50 cumulative GPA. Nominated student-athletes must compete in 90 percent of the institution's games played or must start in at least 66 percent of the games. Each student-athlete nominated has their candidacy evaluated by a sub-committee with sport expertise to ensure that only the top student-athletes are elevated to the national voting ballot.
Recipients of the award are voted on by current dues-paying members of College Sports Communicators, members of the Academic All-America Core Committee, the Academic All-America Hall of Fame Committee, the Executive Board of Directors and CSC national staff. The award aims to recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom.
