Caroline Castans and senior forward
Lexi Watts were both named to the United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-America Second Team and the United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-West Region First Team, the publication announced Thursday.
Castans has maintained a 3.97 cumulative GPA and is currently studying marketing, while Watts holds a 3.61 cumulative GPA and is currently majoring in marketing as well.
"Caroline and Lexi represent exactly what we want our program to stand for, exceeding expectations in the classroom and on the field," Kansas head coach Nate Lie said. "Their commitment, discipline and leadership show up every day, and earning both of these honors is a direct reflection of the standards they set for themselves and for our team. We're incredibly proud of the way they balance academics and athletics while continuing to raise the bar for everyone around them."
Castans set a new single season program record with 15 assists, which led the Big 12 and is tied for third in the country. The Flower Mound, Texas, native contributed two goals on the season, with one of them being the game-winning goal in a 1-0 victory on the road at Oklahoma State. She started all 25 matches this season and contributed to seven shutouts. Castans was third amongst Kansas field players with 2,103 minutes played.Â
This season, Castans was named to United Soccer Coaches All-American Fourth Team, United Soccer Coaches All-Midwest Region Second Team, CSC First Team Academic All-America, CSC Academic All-District Team, Big 12 Soccer All-Tournament Team, All-Big 12 First Team and was named as the Big 12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year. She also received TopDrawerSoccer Women's National Team of the Week on Sept. 23 and Nov. 18, and was the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 24.
Watts, a Lenexa, Kansas, native, set new career highs in goals and points this season. She led the team in both categories with 11 goals and 27 points. Watts finished the year sixth in the Big 12 in goals scored and eighth in the conference in points. She ended her career with 28 goals, 14 assists, 70 points and scored nine game-winning goals. Watts was named to the United Soccer Coaches All-American Fourth Team, was picked to the All-Big 12 First Team for the second straight season and was selected to the United Soccer Coaches All-Midwest Region Second Team.
