COLUMBUS, Ohio –No. 12 Kansas suffered its first defeat of the season in a 1-0 loss to No. 19 Ohio State on Thursday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
Kansas (2-1-0) showed early chances to score, first when Jordan Rowan took a shot in the box that was saved before Jillian Gregorski also had a shot on goal, but her chance was also saved by the Ohio State keeper.
Ohio State (1-0-1) responded with multiple shots on target, but Kansas keeper Sophie Dawe was able to prevent any scoring chance in the first 15 minutes. She finished the first half with a pair of saves.
In the 40th minute, the Buckeyes' Amanda Schlueter took an errant pass in the KU 18-yard box and fired a strike past Dawe to score the first goal of the match. The goal gave Ohio State a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
The Jayhawks were able to tighten up defensively, limiting the Buckeyes to just five shots in the second half. In the 65th minute, OSU's Elle Britt took a shot deep in the box that went outside of Dawe's hand. Caroline Castans was able to step in the way of the strike to save the ball and keep the score at 1-0.
As the match wound down under 10 minutes, Livvy Moore was able to advance the ball to the left side of the field to Castans. She then crossed the ball into Gregorski who was able to head it towards the goal, but the header was blocked by an Ohio State defender.
Kansas was not able to find a goal to tie the match in the closing minutes, allowing OSU to prevail with the 1-0 victory.Â
