LAWRENCE, Kan. – Jordan Rowan's 81st minute goal helped No. 18 Kansas secure a 1-1 draw with No. 20 BYU on Thursday night at Rock Chalk Park. Rowan snuck through a pair of Cougar defenders in the waning moments to tie the match after BYU scored an early goal in the 16th minute.
Kansas (11-3-2, 5-1-2 Big 12) picked up its' second draw of the year, while BYU (9-3-3, 5-1-2 Big 12) added its' third of the year.
"That felt a lot like a postseason match. I think every time that we've played BYU in my time here, we've got a win, a loss and two draws for two pretty evenly matched teams," Kansas head coach
Nate Lie said. "I looked over at Coach Tyler with about 10-15 minutes left after one of the teams had a close opportunity and I was like "man, this is a good game," hopefully the fans enjoyed it."
Lie added, "BYU is very brave in how they play, so it opens up more than I like and we gave up way more opportunities than I'm comfortable with. I think we were able to generate some quality opportunities, but I'm very disappointed in how we came out in the first 15-20 minutes. They deserved to score a goal, and quite honestly we were a little bit fortunate to only be down 1-0 after 20 minutes."Â
"I thought we did a good job of settling in the rest of the half, but still lacked the intensity and we didn't match them enough in that way," Lie said. "The second half I thought was a fistfight back and forth. Great respect for BYU, I love the way they play fair and with class."
BYU applied pressure in the early going, forcing Kansas to defend as the Cougars peppered Sophie Dawe with a pair of shots and a corner kick in the opening 10 minutes.Â
16 minutes in, BYU's pressure paid off when Emma Hamberlin's shot was deflected by a Kansas defender into the back of the net, giving the Cougars a 1-0 advantage.Â
The Jayhawks began to apply pressure of their own minutes later, putting forward a pair of shots that left BYU to defend. Kansas tallied four shots in the first half, while the Cougars added six.
Kansas' best chance to score came in the 42nd minute, when a Caroline Castans cross was deflected away from Jillian Gregorski into the path of Jocelyn Herrema. Herrema's opportunity forced a save from BYU goalkeeper Paiton Collins, who swiftly navigated the trouble. At the half, the Jayhawks trailed 1-0.
Kansas was inches away from equalizing at the start of the second half, when a Cougar giveaway found the waiting feet of Gregorski. Shooting on goal, Gregorski's shot ran just high and rattled off the top woodwork.Â
The Jayhawks were quick to the attack at the beginning of the half, following Gregorski's opportunity with a pair of corner kicks.
BYU increased the pressure in the 60th minute, keeping Dawe busy with a pair of corner kicks.Â
After weathering the Cougars' midway push, Kansas' offense attempted to form a late attack. The Jayhawks hummed to life inside the final 15 minutes, and found an 81st minute equalizer off the foot of Rowan. Rowan sliced through a pair of BYU defenders, receiving an assist from Marit McLaughlin.Â
Moments later, Kansas found itself with another late push after a foul in the 88th minute. A Gregorski free kick was deflected away for a Jayhawk corner, but was cleared away without trouble. BYU would find one last late push, but would be held at bay to wrap up the 1-1 draw.
