Kansas improved to 10-3-1 (4-1-1 Big 12) this season, while Colorado fell to 9-4-1 (3-3-0 Big 12) on the year. The win is Kansas' first ranked win of the season, and moved KU into a tie for second place in the Big 12. Kansas also snapped Colorado's 14-match home winning streak.
"Today was your typical Sunday road match that was going to take a lot of grit, a lot of heart, and a lot of sacrifice to try to get through it," Kansas head coach Nate Lie said. "I have so much respect for Colorado, and their program, and their quality. It's not a game that we were particularly looking forward to outside of the opportunity that it presented, because we know it's going to be a battle. It's going to be physical. They put so much pressure on you in so many different ways. With all that being said, it's a really positive, important, and crucial result by our team, finding a six point weekend on the road after coming off a disappointing result last week. It really took a lot to get over the finish line today."
Lie continued, "It felt like one of those matches that one goal might win it, and out of all the matches we played this year, I think there were less clean chances for either side. Both teams were putting pressure into the box. Thankfully, in the last 10 minutes or so, Marit was able to get behind one beautiful strike. We had to buckle down really hard for the last five minutes to defend that lead. But I'm really proud we got over the finish line. It's a tired and sore group, but as we tell them, if you're going to be tired and sore and hurting, you might as well do it with a win. And hopefully we can build on this one and use it to create some momentum and go chase some pretty lofty goals."
Early on in the match, Kansas had a chance to score off a corner kick from Caroline Castans that went to Jillian Gregorski on the back post. Gregorski headed the ball towards goal, but the shot was deflected by the Buffalo keeper for another corner kick.
The KU defense held tight throughout the first half, as Colorado registered their first shot 23 minutes into the match by Hope Leyba.Â
In the 43rd minute, the Buffaloes had a great scoring chance off a corner kick. Leyba took the corner and directed the ball towards the top left corner of the goal, but Castans was standing on the post and made a jumping save with her head to prevent the score. The match was tied 0-0 going into half, with both KU and CU registering five shots.
The Buffaloes came out of the half with higher offensive pressure, as they took four shots in the first five minutes of the second half, but the Jayhawk defense remained strong to keep the match scoreless.
Sophie Dawe recorded her first save in the 59th minute of the match off a Sloane Phillips strike to keep CU without a goal.
As the match was closing out, Kansas was able to break through to take a 1-0 lead in the match in the 84th minute. Jordan Rowan slid for a loose ball at the top of the box and directed it towards McLaughlin, who fired a strike that deflected off a CU defender and into the goal to give KU a 1-0 lead with six minutes to go.
KU ran out the clock to take the match by a score of 1-0.Â
