FORT WORTH, Texas – Down 2-1 at halftime, No. 18 Kansas stormed back with two second half goals to take down TCU 3-2 on Sunday afternoon at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium in Fort Worth, Texas.Â
Norah Jacomen, Livvy Moore, and Jillian Gregorski all scored goals for Kansas in the win.
Kansas improved to 12-3-2 (6-1-2 Big 12) this season, while TCU fell to 5-9-1 (2-7-0 Big 12) on the year.
"Another wild match and another nerve-wracking one for the coaches, and maybe the players," Kansas head coach Nate Lie said. "I thought we came here with the right mentality, and had a very good 15 to 20 minutes to start off. Great job to Norah for getting that first goal. What can happen against a very good team, like TCU, is that once they get some footing in the game, they get confident, and that can affect our confidence. They hit us on a counter attack, and then they got into their rhythm, and showed the quality that they have."Â
Lie continued, "That second half was probably the best 45 minutes that we've had this year of just staying in control against a good team. I think we had a lot of dangerous service, and created a lot of dangerous plays, and it felt like we were knocking on the door. We didn't find it until those last 15 minutes. We have that kind of confidence that we can continue to fight and compete to the final whistle, but overall, we did a solid job of just competing and finding a way to the finish line. This result is really important. It's one that we needed to find a way."
Jacomen started off the match with a couple of early shots to put pressure on the TCU keeper, but both shots went wide of the goal.
Kansas was rewarded for the early offensive pressure with a goal to take a 1-0 lead. In the eighth minute of the match, Gregorski received the ball in the middle of the field and passed it to Caroline Castans on the left side. She then made a run into the 18-yard box before crossing the ball in front of the goal to an open Jacomen, where she snuck the ball past the keeper to score the first goal of the match.Â
The goal from Jacomen is Kansas' first first half goal since Sept. 3 against Kansas City.
It didn't take long for the Horned Frogs to respond, as they found the equalizer in the 15th minute with a goal from Emma Yolinsky to even the score at 1-1.
Just before halftime, TCU was able to find another goal off a strike from Grace Vest in the 43rd minute of the match to give the Horned Frogs a 2-1 lead going into halftime.Â
Coming out of the half, KU emphasized possessing the ball in TCU territory, as the Jayhawks drew two early corner kicks in the first five minutes. Jacomen also recorded a shot in the box, but the shot was blocked.
The KU defense also tightened up, as the team only allowed just one shot the entire second half and no corner kicks.Â
With Kansas still trailing 2-1 in the 72nd minute, Kate Langfelder was taken down in the box for a potential penalty kick. After a VAR review, it was determined that there was no foul in the box, but a foul occurred just outside of the box for a KU free kick. Livvy Moore took the kick and curled the ball towards the top left corner of the goal, but it was saved by the keeper.
The Jayhawks finally found the game-tying goal in the 79th minute. Langfelder advanced the ball up towards the touchline to a running Jacomen, who then passed the ball on the ground to the far corner of the box. A sprinting Moore ran up and blasted the ball in the upper left corner of the goal to score her first goal of the season, and tied the match at 2-2.
With the match winding down, KU continued to look for the game-winning goal and found it in the 84th minute. Jacomen gave Castans a short pass on the far left sideline, where she crossed the ball towards the middle of the box. Gregorski rose up over the TCU defender and put her head on the ball and directed it into the back of the net to give the Jayhawks the 3-2 advantage.
Kansas was able to close out the last six minutes of the match without allowing any chance for TCU to score for the 3-2 Jayhawk win.
