AUSTIN, Texas – Kansas soccer junior
Caroline Castans was named First Team Academic All-America®, College Sports Communicators (CSC) announced on Wednesday. The First Team selection is the first in the 30-year history of the soccer program at Kansas.
Castans has been voted an Academic All-American in back-to-back seasons, as she was named to the Third Team last year.
"Caroline's selection to the First Team Academic All-America list is a tremendous honor and a true reflection of who she is," Kansas head coach Nate Lie said. "She sets the standard for excellence by excelling in the classroom while competing at the highest level on the field, and her discipline, leadership, and work ethic make her a role model for our entire program."
Castans has maintained a 3.97 cumulative GPA and is currently majoring in marketing. She started all 25 matches this season and set a new single-season program record with 15 assists, which was tied for third in the country and led the Big 12. The Flower Mound, Texas, native scored two goals this year, including the game-winning goal against Oklahoma State, and helped Kansas record six shutouts this season.
This season, Castans was named to the United Soccer Coaches All-American Fourth Team, the United Soccer Coaches All-Midwest Region Second Team, the CSC Academic All-District Team, the Big 12 Soccer All-Tournament Team, the All-Big 12 First Team and was named as the Big 12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year. She also received TopDrawerSoccer Women's National Team of the Week on Sept. 23 and Nov. 18, and was the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 24.
Castans was one of 34 Division I women's soccer athletes to be named Academic All-America honors. She was one of four Division I women's soccer athletes to garner back-to-back selections and one of five Big 12 women's soccer athletes to receive an Academic All-America selection. It is also the 107th occasion a Kansas student-athlete has received Academic All-America honors.
Castans becomes just the second repeat Academic All-American selection in school history, joining Caroline Smith, who earned the honor in both 2004 and 2005. Rylan Childers previously received Academic All-American recognition in 2022 as well.
To qualify for Academic All-America consideration this year, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore academically and athletically, along with having at least a 3.50 cumulative GPA. Nominated student-athletes must compete in 90 percent of the institution's games played or must start in at least 66 percent of the games. Each student-athlete nominated has their candidacy evaluated by a sub-committee with sport expertise to ensure that only the top student-athletes are elevated to the national voting ballot.
