LAWRENCE, Kan. – After opting out of his minor league contract with the Sacramento River Cats, Oakland’s Triple-A affiliate, former Kansas baseball pitcher Mike Zagurski signed a major league deal with the New York Yankees.
Zagurski, a 2005 draftee by the Philadelphia Phillies, started the 2013 season with the Pittsburgh Pirates, throwing a total of six innings and recording five strikeouts, before being optioned back down to Triple-A, where he saw action in 45 games.
During his minor league stint, Zagurski threw 53.1 innings, struck out 83 batters and recorded a 3.04 ERA. He opted out of his minor league deal with the River Cats on Sept. 2, only to be swooped up by the Yankees eight days later.
At Kansas, Zagurski was a weekend regular during the 2004 and 2005 seasons. He threw a total of 185.2 innings during his career, recording 182 strikeouts. His 112 strikeouts in 2005 ranks No. 1 in the Jayhawk record books for the most strikeouts in a single season.
