LAWRENCE, Kan. - No. 9 Kansas Volleyball will open their 2024 conference season by hosting the UCF Knights inside Horejsi Family Volleyball Arena on Wednesday, September 25, with first serve set for 6 p.m. The Houston Cougars will then come to Horejsi for a Friday night battle at 6:30 p.m., which will be streamed on ESPN+.
"I know our team is excited to open up Big 12 play at home this week against two very quality teams," said Kansas Head Coach Ray Bechard. "We think our non-conference schedule has prepared us well for what lies ahead."
Kansas comes into Big 12 play winners of nine of their 10 non-conference matches, highlighted by wins over No. 24 Marquette, No. 6 Purdue, Duke, and Western Michigan. The Jayhawks feature a potent offense headlined by seniors
Ayah Elnady,
London Davis, and
Camryn Turner. Kansas also has an incredible mark inside Horejsi Family Volleyball Arena, going 18-2 over their last 20 regular season games at home.
Turner was named this week's Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week after a stellar showing in the Jayhawk Classic last weekend. The senior out of Topeka, Kansas tied her career-high number of assists with 59 in the team's 3-1 victory of then-No. 6 Purdue. Turner surpassed 3,000 career assists as well, and currently is No. 3 on the NCAA assists/set leaderboard with an average of 11.39.
UCF marches into Wednesday 7-2 in their non-conference slate, as the Knights have been no stranger to playing deep into matches. UCF has taken part in three five-set matches this season, winning two of them. The Knights are led by sophomore Avah Armour, who leads the team with 114 kills. UCF carries a 3-1 non-conference road record into Big 12 play, with their only loss coming to Florida State in Tallahassee.
Kansas and UCF will be meeting for the 5th time on the volleyball court, as the teams have split in their four matches prior to Wednesday. In their last get-together, Kansas topped the Knights 3-1, as that match also took place in Lawrence a year ago.
Houston will be coming into the first week of Big 12 play after going 5-5 in their non-conference schedule, most recently coming off of a 3-0 sweep of Tennessee State. The Cougars will be playing K-State on Wednesday in Manhattan to kick off their second season in the Big 12 before coming to Lawrence on Friday night.
Last season, Kansas won both matches in 3-2 and 3-0 respective scores. The two matches were played in Horejsi, and the last time the teams had played each other prior was back in 1987, when Houston took the 3-1 victory over the Jayhawks in Lawrence.
Wednesday's Big 12 opener can be streamed on ESPNU with Paul Sunderland and Nicole Branagh on the call. First serve is set for 6 p.m, and fans can follow along via StatBroadcast and by following Kansas Volleyball on X @KUVolleyball.
