LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas soccer will host its annual Community Kindness Match in Honor of Regan Gibbs on Thursday, Oct. 16 at Rock Chalk Park. The match against West Virginia is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT and will be used as a platform to provide information about domestic violence resources in the community and focus on the impact of domestic violence.
The Kansas soccer family lost a former Jayhawk as a result of domestic violence. In May 2022, Regan Gibbs was a victim of domestic violence. Gibbs, who was 25, played goalkeeper at KU from 2015-18 and was a member of two NCAA Tournament teams. A moment of silence will be held for Gibbs and all victims of domestic violence before the match.
KU will be wearing a patch on its uniforms for the match in honor of Gibbs and will also have her initials of "RG" painted on the field.
"This match is about more than soccer – it's about honoring Regan's memory and standing together as a community against domestic violence," Kansas head coach Nate Lie said. "We want this night to remind everyone that kindness, awareness, and support can save lives."
Kansas will be partnering with the Willow Domestic Violence Center to host a donation drive for the game. The donation drive will begin on Monday, Oct. 13 and run through the day of the match. Donation boxes will be placed on campus at the main entrance of the Wagnon Student-Athlete Center and in front of the Anderson Family Strength Center. There will also be a donation box outside the gate where fans enter at Rock Chalk Park on the day of the game. Fans interested in making a donation should bring any of the below items.
