Kansas moved to 4-0 with an 82-77 victory over Missouri Saturday night in the StorageMart Border Showdown at T-Mobile Center in Kansas City. Junior guard
S'Mya Nichols and senior guard
Elle Evans scored 20 points apiece, while freshman forward
Jaliya Davis added 15 and sophomore forward
Regan Williams had 14 in the win.
The Jayhawks are now 4-0 for the second straight season, fourth time in the past five seasons and the seventh time in 11 seasons under the direction of coach
Brandon Schneider. KU's best start under Schneider was an 11-0 beginning to the 2019-20 campaign.
Nichols is off to another strong start, opening with three 20-point scoring efforts in the first four games of her junior season. She leads the Jayhawks and ranks fifth in the Big 12 in both scoring (19.5 points per game) and assists (6.8 per game). Nichols has moved up to No. 27 on KU's all-time scoring list with 1,143 career points.
Evans has heated up from beyond the arc the past two games, hitting four three-pointers in each game. She's coming off her best all-around performance of the season as she totaled 20 points, four rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocked shots in the win over Missouri. Evans is sixth in the Big 12 with 12 made three-pointers, but she's shooting a league-leading 60.0 percent (12-20) from long range.
Davis returned to the lineup vs. Missouri after missing the previous game and scored 15 points with three rebounds and three assists. Davis has reached double figures in each of her first three games, and she ranks as KU's second-leading scorer at 17.7 points per game.
Williams has scored in double figures three times in the first four games, including a double-double of 11 points and 12 rebounds against Lamar on Nov. 12. After scoring 14 points with seven rebounds vs. Missouri, Williams is KU's third-leading scorer (11.8 ppg) and leading rebounder (7.5 rpg).
Senior forward
Lilly Meister, a Rochester, Minnesota native, joins Nichols as the only KU players to start all four games this season. Meister is fifth on the team in scoring at 7.3 points per game and second on the team with 6.5 rebounds per game.
Minnesota also enters the contest with an unblemished 4-0 record, and the Gophers are receiving votes in the latest Associated Press poll. Minnesota is averaging 92.0 points per game, with wins over North Dakota, Manhattan, Marquette and NJIT by an average of 49.8 points, which is the No. 7 scoring margin in Division I women's basketball.
Kansas and Minnesota will be meeting for the first time since 2013 and the 19th time in series history, which dates back to 1978. The Jayhawks lead the series 14-4, including a 7-0 mark against the Gophers in Lawrence. The teams split a home-and-home in 2012 and 2013, with the home team winning both matchups.
