Long Beach, Calif. – Kansas put together its most complete performance of the season on Saturday, highlighted by dominant pitching, stellar defense, and key offensive moments. The Jayhawks controlled the pace for much of the game but ultimately fell in a hard-fought 2-1 battle against Cal at the Wilson Invitational at the LBSU Softball Complex .
"This was the best complete game we've played all season," said Head Coach Jennifer McFalls. "Our defense was spot on, we made clutch plays, and our offense really bought into the game plan with confidence at the plate. I love the fight we had tonight—it's a great sign moving forward."
The Jayhawks wasted no time making an impact, as senior Olivia Bruno delivered a hard-hit ball to right field in the first inning, driving in the game's opening run. Her clutch hit set the tone early, giving Kansas a 1-0 lead.
Junior Lizzy Ludwig got the start in the circle and was in command from the beginning. She retired the Golden Bears in order in the first inning, working efficiently with sharp infield play behind her. Ludwig continued to stifle Cal's offense, forcing quick innings and keeping the game locked in a tight battle.
Cal managed to even the score in the second inning, but Kansas' defense remained strong, making key plays to keep the Golden Bears off the board for four consecutive frames. The Jayhawks showcased their defensive prowess, highlighted by a crucial catch from Kadence Stafford in left field and an outstanding effort at second base helped maintained the tie and keep the game within reach
As the game entered the seventh inning, Kansas had one final opportunity to take the lead. Despite solid contact at the plate, the Jayhawks were unable to break through. Senior Katie Brooks entered in relief, looking to push the game to extra innings, but Cal managed to plate a decisive run in the bottom of the seventh to secure the win.
