BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Kansas softball team is set to open its season with a three-day road trip to Boca Raton, Florida, competing in the Paradise Classic from Feb. 6-8 at Joan Joyce Field.
The Jayhawks will begin their five-game slate on Friday, Feb. 6, facing No. 25 Clemson in the season opener before taking on AAC champion Florida Atlantic. Kansas continues to play on Saturday, Feb. 7, with a matchup against Big Ten opponent Wisconsin, followed by a contest against Missouri State. The weekend will conclude on Sunday, Feb. 8, with a showdown against SEC foe Ole Miss.
"We are really excited to take the field this week in Florida," Head Coach Jennifer McFalls said. "It's time to see how we match up against other opponents besides ourselves. This team has come together well over the last few months, and we're all looking forward to a great 2025 season!"
The 2024 season saw many milestones for the Jayhawks. The team earned a record-high 28 wins, the most in program history since the 2018 season. Among these milestones, the Jayhawks recorded a historic series sweep over No. 19 Baylor. This marked the program's first Big 12 series sweep since 2005. The Jayhawks also secured a seven-game winning streak, the longest since 1997. With a dominating presence in Big 12 play, they achieved three total sweeps against Baylor, Houston, and Iowa State—an accomplishment not matched in nearly 20 years.Â
Kansas returns 14 players, including juniors Presley Limbaugh, Campbell Bagshaw, Hailey Cripe, and Aynslee Linduff, who look to make another impact this season. Last year, each started in 35 or more games and led the team in various statistical categories. Limbaugh boasted a .379 batting average, tying June Koleber (1980) for 10th on the program's all-time single-season list. Cripe led the team with 10 doubles, 75 total bases, and 34 RBIs, highlighted by her first career multi-home run game at Houston on March 22. She recorded two grand slams last season, most recently at Iowa State, and added another home run against No. 1 Texas.
In the circle, the Jayhawks return senior pitcher Katie Brooks and Junior Lizzy Ludwig. Brooks has posted a 12-6 record across 105.0 innings pitched. One of her standout performances came against UTSA on Feb. 23, when she struck out 10 batters in just five innings. Brooks leads the team with a 3.13 ERA among qualified pitchers and has recorded 64 strikeouts while allowing only four home runs, the second-fewest in the Big 12. Additionally, she earned preseason Big 12 honors. Ludwig earned CSC Academic All-District and First Team Academic All-Big 12 honors in 2024. She ranked third among Kansas pitchers in appearances (13) and starts (3), finishing with nine strikeouts and a 6.06 ERA. She recorded a season-high three strikeouts at Houston (March 23) and posted a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage with 10 catches, two putouts, and eight assistsÂ
The Jayhawks hold winning records against their first-game opponents, including a 2-0 mark against FAU (last met in 2015) and Wisconsin (last met in 2016). Kansas has won five straight against Missouri State, most recently a 9-0 victory in 2024, and claimed a 2-1 win in its only meeting with Ole Miss in 2003. The matchup against No. 25 Clemson will be the first meeting in program history.
