Kansas has now scored at least 10 runs in 15 games this season. With the home run by Hauge and a homer by Sawyer Smith, Kansas further extended its single-season home run program record with 78 on the season. Kansas improved to 28-10 overall with the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Wichita State (12-23) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning. The first run scored on a wild pitch and then an RBI single by Kam Durnin and a two-run double by Ryan Callahan got the Shockers out to an early lead.
• Brady Counsell helped Kansas get one of those runs back in the bottom of the first on an RBI groundout to make it 4-1.
• The Shockers made it 5-1 in the top of the second when a run scored on an error.
• Kansas took the lead in the bottom of the second with a five-run frame. Max Soliz Jr. and Derek Cerda each had RBI singles and Hauge hit a three-run homer to left field. That gave Kansas a 6-5 lead.
• Wichita State took the lead back in the fourth with two runs. Callahan and Cole Dillon each had RBI singles to take a 7-6 lead.
• The Jayhawks answered immediately with a seven-run inning in the bottom of the fourth. Smith led off the frame with a solo homer. Then, Hauge hit an RBI single to take the lead. Counsell drew a bases loaded walk, Michael Brooks hit an RBI single, Hauge and Counsell scored on a fielding error and Tommy Barth hit a sacrifice fly to make it 13-7.
• Callahan cut the Wichita State deficit to 13-9 with a two-run single in the fifth inning.
• KU got those runs back in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run double by Counsell and a two-run single by Brooks. That stretched the lead to 17-9.
• An RBI single from Wichita State's Jaden Gustafson and a sacrifice fly by Lane Haworth trimmed the Kansas lead to 17-11.
• Hauge added a run in the seventh inning as he hustled home on a wild pitch to make it 18-11.
• The Shockers got that run back in the top of the eighth on an RBI groundout from Durnin to bring the score to 18-12. That is where the scoring would ultimately end.

QUOTABLES & NOTABLES
"Proud of the guys for winning and for being resilient early. That was as choppy a start to a baseball game as I've been a part of in a long time. I tell the guys on a daily basis that you never get to write the script on how it's going to play out, but you got to be able to ad lib and figure it out. To give up a four spot, which could have been worse, and then to wiggle out of it in the second was really big. Then, the five-spot put us ahead and got our momentum going and then the seven spot in fourth. We needed all of it tonight. I'm proud of how we compete and I love the guys, but we also have to learn from mistakes and be better when we're called upon in certain spots." – Head Coach Dan Fitzgerald
"I was just trying to be on time with the fastball and work off that. Usually when I do that, I'm pretty good and executed the plan tonight. I set a triples record at Mankato, a school record. I thought they knew, but it's fine. I scored, and that's all that matters. Who knows, they probably throw me out and I don't score. We needed all the runs we could get tonight." – Jackson Hauge
• Kansas has scored at least 10 runs in 15 games this season.
• Kansas has hit 78 home runs this season.
• Kansas finished with 10 walks in the game. The Jayhawks have double-digit walks in seven games this season.
• The 4-hour, 1-minute game was the longest nine-inning game since May 24, 2024 vs. Oklahoma (4:01).
• Hauge hit his Big 12-leading 16th home run of the season. He finished 4-for-6 with two doubles, a home run, four RBIs and four runs. His four hits and four runs matched a career high. Hauge has 15 multi-hit games this season.
• Smith belted his seventh homer of the year.
• Counsell matched his career high with four RBIs.
